What should I do to prepare for my spray tan?
Day 1: Shave
Try to shave and scrub in separate shower sessions. Doing both at once can be rough on the skin.
Day 2: Scrub (using a nice, non abrasive exfoliant)
We recommend exfoliating 48 HOURS prior to spray tan time in order to allow enough time for skin to completely shed before spray tan application.
Day 3: Spray Tan
On this day please be sure to shower 2+ hours before appointment time and do not rush home to shower before coming in unless it is necessary. Bring or wear loose, dark clothing.
Day 4: Shower, moisturize, and enjoy our beautiful, radiant tan!
What clothes should I wear for my spray tan appointment?
Most people choose to wear nothing, which is absolutely fine and even recommended. The room is completely private with no open windows. If you do choose to wear a bathing suit, underwear, a bra, etc, please note that the spray tanning solution may stain these items. Norvell spray tanning solution is in fact water soluble and should wash out, but the DHA in the solution may stain your clothing. Please wear or bring dark, loose-fitted clothing to wear home. Please do not wear leggings home from your appointment if you want tan legs.
How long should I wait to shower after my spray tan?
Scientifically, spray tans take 24 hours to process on our skin so- Studio 13 recommends that our clients wait 24 hours to shower if possible. We also recommend you use luke-warm water only with minimal soap during the first shower following your spray tan. This will ensure a long lasting tan and smooth results!
How long will my spray tan last?
On average, a spray tan typically lasts from 5 to 7 days. BUT, what you do before and after your spray tan directly affect how long your spray tan will last. Exfoliating your skin prior to your spray tanning appointment, using an exfoliating scrub or dry brush will ensure the longest lasting spray tan. Showering with luke warm water and with minimal amounts of soap will also ensure your spray tan lasts as long as possible. Studio 13 recommends that our clients apply moisturizing lotions to their skin often, especially within 3 minutes after your shower, to ensure your skin is as moisturized as possible and slows your skin’s natural exfoliation process. Keeping your skin hydrated after your spray tan is key to boosting your tans longevity.
Will my spray tan look orange?
Absolutely Not! Studio 13 follows a very strict spray tanning mantra: No orange spray tans, EVER! Studio 13 uses Norvell Sunless Spray Tanning solution, the healthiest and most natural spray tanning solution available. The organic ingredients used in Norvell’s solutions interact with the natural nutrients within your skin to moisturize and form a color of tan customized to your skin tone. The orange color that is the unfortunate result of an orange spray tan occurs due to an imbalance of your skin’s natural pH levels caused by poor quality spray tanning solutions with high chemical contents or expired solutions. Thankfully, Norvell’s organic and amino acid infused solutions work to bring your skin’s pH as close to its natural state as possible. No harmful chemicals. No orange. Only beautifully radiant spray tans!
Will my spray tan make me smell bad?
Not a Studio 13 Spray Tan! Studio 13 spray tanning solutions contain natural organic raspberry almond parfum that act to balance the solution’s pH and remove any musty or unnatural smells from the solution. The Venetian has a coconut scent!
What about shaving, pedicures, manicures or waxing?
Shaving: It is good to shave before your spray tan; just be sure to wait to shave again at least 24 hours after application. Shaving is a form of exfoliation, so it is good to do before your spray tan, but shaving can aid in the wearing-away process of our spray tans overtime. Just be careful and maybe skip that one day of shaving. We also recommend shaving 12 hours before spray tan time, so your sensitive new skin cells don’t get irritated by the spray tan.
Pedicures and Manicures: It is fine to get a polish change on our hands and toes after a spray tan, but you cannot get a full pedi for at least 24 hours after your spray tan appointment. AKA any process that requires us to stick our hands and feet into hot water following a spray tan is a no-go. Even the luxurious lotion massage that comes along with the a pedicure is just another form of exfoliation that is not good for the spray tan. Please schedule all mani-pedis BEFORE your spray tan OR 24 HOURS FOLLOWING YOUR SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT.
Waxing: Please wax at least 12 hours before your spray tan, and for the sake of your beautiful tan please do not do any waxing the days following your spray tan (unless you want awkward tan lines).
Overall, you want to preserve the top layer of skin that has the spray tan on it. These above processes tend to wear away the spray tan, so just be mindful in scheduling your appointments.
Can I spray tan if I am pregnant?
You sure can! The spray tan process only happens in the top layer of skin, the epidermis, so it doesn’t get inside of your body. The spray tan isn’t damaging like the sun or tanning beds. The only concern we have is breathing in the solution. You have the option of wearing a face mask during your session as a precaution if you are worried about breathing the solution in, but it is not enclosed like the mystic booths. We have lots of pregnant women coming in- it truly makes them feel better to have a little tan glow!
Should I moisturize my skin or use lotions before my spray tan?
No. Any lotions, oils, or moisturizers on the skin act as a barrier between the spray tanning solution and your skin, so it is important to come with your skin free of any lotions.
Should I moisturize my skin and use lotion after my spray tan?
Yes. Using lotions will help to hydrate your skin and reduce the flaking-off and exfoliation of your spray tan. Keeping your skin moisturized after your spray tan is THE BEST way to maximize the life of your spray tan.
Can I Exercise after getting my spray tan?
Studio 13 recommends that you avoid exercise for 24 hours after receiving your spray tan to allow your tan to develop properly. Remember, any friction on the skin caused by working out will only increase your skin’s rate of exfoliation and decrease the life of your spray tan.
Will the spray tanning bronzer rub off onto my clothes or bed sheets?
If you are using a spray tan solution with cosmetic bronzer (either Norvell Original or Norvell Venetian), some of the bronzer may rub off onto bed sheets or clothing items. If this happens, simply wash the item with standard laundry detergent to remove the cosmetic bronzer, and it should wash-out completely. To minimize the amount of spray tan rubbed off after your appointment, Studio 13 recommends wearing loose or baggy fitted clothing to your appointment, and refrain from physical activity or working out– this will cause you to sweat and cause your spray tan to come off. Remember, Studio 13 offers Spray tans with Norvell Clear solution, which is bronzer-free, applies like water and still develops a radiant tan!
I have an event to attend, what day should I come in?
We recommend coming in 2 days before an event, dance, holiday party, night out, etc. So if you have a hot date on a Saturday night, it would be best to come in on Thursday. This gives you that 24 hour window to let your tan marinate and then some time to let your tan even and fade out- leaving your tan in its best form for that special day! This applies to weddings as well.
If you are going on vacation- it is best to come a day or 2 before you leave. On vacations we tend to get in hot tubs, the ocean, sand and apply tons of spf, so we want our tan to be done as close to departure time as possible. You may consider baring the smell of refreshing raspberry almond or coconut on the plane or car ride and showering once you land at your destination. You will feel great about stepping into that bikini with the tan you already have!
I am getting married. Should I do a trial spray tan?
You should absolutely do at least one trial run before your wedding- at least 3 weeks before the big day. You will want to “get to know” the spray tan maintenance routine and make sure you have found the best spray tan solution option for you!

Will my spray tan act as sunscreen?
No. Spray tanning solution does not contain any SPF and you can still get a sun burn if exposed to the sun. If you plan on being out in the sun, it is recommended to use sun screen.
